Case Study A: Replacing an Outdated HDD with a New SSD
One of our customers provides support to their clients for systems with a remarkable 20-year lifespan. The primary reason for such longevity is the substantial multi-million-dollar investment in each system, leading to a prolonged return on investment. Recently, this customer approached To-Team with a unique request for a very old Toshiba-manufactured HDD with a 30GB capacity, 1.8" size, and IDE connectivity.
Unfortunately, this particular HDD had reached its End of Life (EOL) more than a decade ago. As a temporary solution, our customer acquired refurbished HDDs, but they proved to have a short lifespan, resulting in significant headaches for their service team. Tragically, even these refurbished HDDs eventually became unavailable, leaving the customer with no alternative but to discard a multi-million-dollar industrial machine over an inexpensive HDD.
In light of this dilemma, the customer reached out to To-Team, describing their predicament. Initially, we attempted to locate the same Product Number (P/N) previously used by the customer, but to no avail. Subsequently, after careful consideration, we thoroughly analysed the product interface, capacity, and expected performance.
To-Team's solution was to offer a 40GB CF card with IDE connectivity. Both the CF card and the HDD share the same connectivity and connector, making the transition smoother. Notably, they possess similar capacity; however, the SSD demonstrates superior endurance and, most importantly, is brand new, eliminating any concerns associated with used/refurbished products.
This event occurred in 2018, and since then, the customer has sourced 50 to 200 pieces of CF cards annually.
